What makes a screenshot easy to place
The more checkable detail a screenshot keeps, the more reliable the answer. A cropped corner of a wall gives almost nothing.
- Text and signs
- Zoom into any street name, shop sign or road number before you upload.
- Language narrows the country. A business name or road number can narrow the street.
- Road and curb details
- Keep the lane markings, curb style and driving side visible.
- These separate countries. Driving side, line colours and sign shapes differ by region.
- Buildings on both sides
- Include the facades, roof shapes and building heights near the camera.
- Compare their order and spacing with Street View at each suggested place.
- The horizon
- Leave the skyline or distant hills in the frame.
- A ridge line or a distinctive tower is a strong second clue to confirm a first guess.
A suggestion is a lead to check, not proof. Compare the suggested place with Street View before you rely on it.
Street View screenshot questions
How do I find the location of a Street View or Google Earth screenshot?
Drop the screenshot in the box on this page. Oceanir reads the signs, buildings, road markings and terrain visible in it and suggests places on a map, with the clues behind each one. Screenshots of Street View, Google Earth and other map views are judged by the scene they show.
What is reverse street view search?
It means starting from a picture of a street and working back to where it is. Oceanir does this by reading what is in the picture, then you compare the suggested places with Street View yourself. It does not search a database of Street View images for a pixel match.
Should I crop out the Google interface?
Only if it covers the scene. Keep the road, the buildings on both sides and any signs. Do not crop away the horizon or the skyline, because those are useful clues. Map labels on the screenshot are ignored as evidence of the place.
Why did it give a city, not a street?
Many streets look alike, and a screenshot with no sign, no shopfront and no distinctive building supports a city or region at best. Oceanir shows how sure it is and says when it is only a best guess.
Can I use a screenshot of someone's home?
Oceanir finds where a picture was taken. It does not tell you who lives anywhere, and it will not help find a person. Use it for streets, buildings and views.
Is it free?
Free with an account. No card needed. Free checks have monthly limits. Deeper searches on a single photo are available as a one-time purchase.
